The St. Francis dam site. It was quite a powerful experience to stand in the remains of a dam that once stood 185 ft tall. The dam catastrophically failed on March 12, 1928 and remains a testament to geo- and engineering hazards.
Pretty pumped to shoot these soon. Right now, every new date creates as many questions as it answers. #petrology #petrochronology #igneous #zircon #geochronology
Hard to see because of the poor quality photo, but there is a lot going on over there. Understanding those "old" structures may be key for the pluton. #pluton #geology #igneous #petrology
There is some debate about the age of the Little Willow Formation and timing of amphibolite facies metamorphism. The age of both has far reaching implications for North American tectonics, snowball earth, and Proterozoic depositional systems. We'll soon find out the answer!!
Some nice new wall decorations in the Sutton Building. This is only two of many new, interesting rocks to see in the hallways. #uofu #geologyand geophysics #cmes #petrology
A thin section would be nice. Up close on the clots of titanite/qtz/plg/alk-fs surrounded by hornblende.
Two enclaves, two origins, both within the Little Cottonwood Stock. The pale one on the left has abundant(!) titanites surrounded by a reaction texture. First time seeing this, I'll have to ponder a while.
I'm excited to finally have our single-shot laser ablation depth profiling paper out soon in Chemical Geology. This figure is an example of a cooling history that can be extracted from the near-rim zoning of titanite or zircon (and likely monazite). Check it out soon!
Spotted in Denver Int'l Airport. Mafic enclave clearly cut by several k-feldspar megacrysts. Mixing then late stage growth? The more you look, the more common this relationship becomes. #petrology #buildingstone #geology #plutons #igneouspetrology
Anyone spy the imbrication? #structure #structuralgeology #geology #sevier Bonus points for the younger, cross-cutting extension.
This rock reminds me of starry night. Quite the strain localization and rheology contrasts. #petrology #deformation #geology #soup
A spectacular true color image of the Moon's surface taken by Yutu Rover in 2014. https://t.co/TN4gPien6k
Just north of Lake Sarez It's a pretty remote area I was fortunate enough to visit in 2010. I hope everyone is okay. https://t.co/clkdqnsyQz
I don't work for NASA, but #TheMartian sure made me proud to be a scientist!
